Notre début/ Our beginning
L’Arcade coopérative, Press Start, dirigé par les jeunes, a émergé à la Maison Saint-Columba, suite à un processus d’un ans consistant à réfléchir sur la programmation des jeunes et sur les besoins des jeunes de la communauté de Pointe-Saint-Charles, à Montréal. Cinq jeunes ont travaillé côte à côte avec trois intervenants jeunesse pour élaborer un processus approfondi dans lequel plus de deux cents jeunes ont été consultés.
Grâce à des entretiens individuels, des discussions de groupe et des sondages en ligne, une grande quantité d’informations a été recueillie. Après avoir révisé, organiser et analyser l’information, de nombreuses questions et besoins ont été identifiés. Quelques thèmes ont émergé de tel que les besoins de: possibilités d’emploi pour les jeunes dans la communauté; d’espaces «Par les jeunes, pour les jeunes» où les jeunes peuvent se rassembler et socialiser dans un cadre informel; d’espaces et de lieux où les jeunes ont un véritable pouvoir décisionnel.
La solution proposée au cours de la consultation pour résoudre ces problèmes est de développer une entreprise coopérative.
Nous voici trois ans plus tard, quatre jeunes travaillant au développement d'une coopérative dirigée par des jeunes, à Pointe-Saint-Charles.
Nous sommes maintenant dans la phase II de notre projet ; nous venons de lancer notre nouveau projet, Press Start Employment Initiative.
The Press Start Co-op emerged out of Saint-Columba House from a two-year process of reflecting on youth programming and the needs of youth in the community of Pointe- Saint-Charles, Montréal. Five youth worked side by side with three youths workers to devise an extensive process in which over two hundred youth were consulted. Through individual interviews, group discussions and online surveys a great deal of information was gathered.
After sifting through, organising and analysing the info numerous issues and needs were identified. A few themes that emerged include the need: for employment opportunities for youth in the community; for “By youth, for youth” spaces, where youth can come together and socialize in an informal setting; for spaces and places where youth has real decision-making power.
A solution proposed during the consultation to develop a cooperative business is what was decided upon as the action to address these issues. Here we are three years later, four youth working to develop a youth-led co-operative, in Pointe-Saint-Charles.
We are now in phase II of our project we have just launched our new project, Press Start Employment Initiative.
